The Influence Project
The Influence Project showcases portraits that celebrate pioneering Black musicians who made significant contributions to the history and current styles of soul, funk, R&B, and hip hop. The exhibition was created by Alexis Chabala and Lorayne Crawford.
The show also illustrates connections to contemporary artists so that younger generations can appreciate the significance of these relationships. Featuring photographic portraits of over 100 artists, the exhibition chronicles musical pioneers from the mid-to-late 20th century. Artists featured in this show include revolutionary R&B influencer and force behind the Parliament/Funkadelic machine, George Clinton, Soul legend and Grammy Award-winner Deniece Williams, Intergalactic Travellers and Afrofuturism trailblazers Sun Ra Arkestra, Motown Martha Reeves, Hip Hop artist Lauryn Hill, collective The Roots, and R&B sensation Angie Stone.
Aaron Siskind: Mid Century Modern
Aaron Siskind: Mid Century Modern focuses on photographs made by Aaron Siskind during the late 1940s and 1950s while he was interacting with the major figures of mid-twentieth-century painting. The exhibition concentrates on a pivotal period when Siskind’s interest in abstraction established a new frame of reference for postwar photography in the larger precincts of art. The installation — a portion of which will reinterpret the groupings and design of Siskind’s Egan Gallery exhibitions — will examine the relationship between Siskind’s approach to the walls of the galleries as surfaces of display and the flat surface of the works of art themselves.
The exhibition is curated by Merry Foresta, MOPA Curator-At-Large, formerly Senior Curator of Photography and Director of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative.
